What is depression?
An increase in the incidence of depression over the last fifty years indicates that it is not primarily a biological illness. It is, however, an emotional illness and brought on by life experiences and how we deal with them.
The depressed state is one created by your thoughts and your emotional state which usually happens over a prolonged period of time. It’s the mental, emotional and physical “de-pressing” of the self, where natural feelings of energy, fun, happiness, peace and contentment are missing.
What causes depression?
Incidence of depression has risen ten-fold since the end of World War II. This has been attributed to the break down of traditional social networks, breakdown of the family circle and people having higher expectations from life.
There can be many causes of depression. People who are depressed often think it is their depression that is causing them a problem, and it is. However, although the depression is causing a problem and is very upsetting for them, depression is actually a symptom of an underlying cause.
Every thought you have sends a chemical from the brain throughout the body as a communication of that thought. Depression has often been described as a clinical, physiological state, where chemicals associated with depression are found in the blood. This is true. However, if every thought we have produces a chemical from the brain which is passed to the body – it would make sense that perhaps the depressed body is flooded with depressing chemicals because the underlying thoughts are releasing those chemicals from the brain. If there are underlying, unresolved emotions or issues within the unconsciousness, then this would account for the advancement of depression.
Depression is unique in its experience to all sufferers. Some experience differing symptoms of exhaustion, tearfulness, lack of libido, etc. However, the common theme with depression is the loss of purpose to life, which is often accompanied by anger or sadness. Once the feelings of depression are evident, the depressed person tends to focus on the negative feelings, which in turn leads to more negativity and life, day by day, becomes less attractive.

Angela’s experience is that depressed clients have not resolved certain emotional issues in their lives and this, over time, has created a “de-pression” or “suppression” of the self, where the self cannot move forward and connect with meaningfulness in their life. The negative emotions attached to the underlying cause need to be addressed and resolved in order to allow the person to “ex-press” themselves within their life, and bloom once more.
