Social Anxiety or Social Phobia
Shyness - Fear of Rejection
Anxiety around social events can be debilitating for some people. Many who suffer from this condition find their lives hindered by fear and anxiety, affecting all kinds of areas of their lives, from their work, social interactions and opportunities and their relationships or chance of making friends. This is usually a chronic condition, where the person is hyper alert to other people, other people's personal judgments and rejection. Sufferers often find themselves avoiding social contact or dreading social events, bumping into someone or mixing with others. Cognitive ruminations are often debilitating for this person, going over and over experiences to re-examine if they 'made a fool of themselves', what was said or not said and mind-reading what others may have been thinking. Social anxiety hinders career choices, promotions, a sense of adventure, self-esteem, confidence opportunities and forming relationships. Inhibited by low self-esteem and fear of 'exposure', social anxiety often has its roots in childhood and shame. It often manifests as 'shyness', but the effects can be far-reaching. |
