What To Expect In a Therapy Session with Angela
Everyone is unique. We have a unique childhood, personality, mind and perception. We are more than just our behaviours or our thoughts. We are made up of our values, beliefs, past, present, experiences and more, which go into making us the unique person we are. Therefore, Angela respectfully structures the way she works around each individual client rather than a "one size fits all" therapy session.
During the initial session of 75 minutes, you and Angela will be able to discuss the issues facing you and outline a goal or focus for your time together, as well as starting work together during that initial session. Any following sessions are an hour in duration and each session is set at a time convenient for you with appropriate intervals in-between sessions for the issues you are working through. |
There aren't "set" weekly sessions as such as each client is treated individually and Angela and her client will together decide on the potential length and regularity of their time together. Sessions for couples are 75 mins in duration for each session and appointment duration for teenagers are determined by the teenager's age. The stop smoking session is a unique, one-off session of 2 hours.
As everyone is individual and responds to change at their own pace, it is not possible to say for sure how long exactly or how many sessions are to be set aside in order to achieve the change you desire. Some clients may attend psychotherapy for 6 sessions, which is very brief therapy and sometimes the work together takes 6 to 12 months. Angela does work with longer-term clients as well. However, during the first session, you and Angela will discuss your work together, the goal you will be working towards and set aside a number of sessions along with a review date. Talking to someone, a stranger, about emotional issues can sometimes seem uncomfortable, but the reality is, for most people, the opposite. Angela provides a safe place for her clients to share their story or problem(s). You won't be expected to fill any silent moments and if you don't know what to say or how to tell your "story", that's ok, Angela will help you. There is no right nor wrong way to discuss the issue you wish to work on and no "correct" order in which to tell it - just talk as you remember it and Angela will follow you. And there's no rush - the initial session is scheduled for 75 minutes, so you can relax and take your time. Some clients bring notes to jog their memories and some don't - choose whatever works for you. |
By the end of the first or second session, you will probably have a sense of where the therapy is going, a direction and a clearer goal of what it is you want to achieve. At this point you may also have a deeper or better understanding of your issue already.
You may be asked to do some "self-work" in-between sessions, such as read something Angela has given you to read. Again, each client is individual, so there is no "set way" Angela works. Email exchanges may happen between Angela and her clients between sessions, if appropriate to the way they are working. All correspondence and session details are confidential and Angela will discuss this in more detail with you during your first session. Angela works both online via Zoom and in-person at her clinic in Horam, East Sussex, which is easily accessed from Tunbridge Wells, Eastbourne, Lewes, Battle, Hailsham and Heathfield. She also works extensively across the UK, Europe, Canada, USA and Australia via the online platform, Zoom. These sessions allow clients to access Angela's service no matter the distance between them.
