What is depression?
An increase in the incidence of depression over the last fifty years indicates that it is not primarily a biological illness, although there can be a physiological trigger or deficiency. It is, however, mostly an emotional unwellness brought on by life experiences and how we deal with them.
The depressed state is one created by your thoughts and your emotional state which usually happens over a prolonged period of time. It’s the mental, emotional and physical “de-pressing” of the self, where natural feelings of energy, fun, happiness, peace and contentment are missing.
Causes of depression can begin with bereavement, loss, relationship breakdowns and issues, childbirth, childhood abuse, drug or substance abuse, low self-esteem, work issues, unemployment, money concerns, sexual issues, health issues, bullying, discrimination, domestic violence, anger issues, cultural issues, loneliness, miscarriage, etc.
Some depressive symptoms are caused through physical imbalance, such as thyroid issues and hormonal imbalances. Angela recommends that you seek medical advice from your GP in the first instance. Your doctor will diagnose whether or not you're depressed and investigate any medical reasons for that.
