Teenagers and Adolescent Issues
Recent years have seen a rise in anxiety rates for teenagers and adolescents as well as depression, self-harm and suicide. Being a young person in today's world can feel confusing, pressured and even hopeless. There are many demands on our youth and many uncertainties for them. Alongside hormonal fluctuations and changes, there are anxieties about exams, careers, parents divorcing, social media concerns which can give us false images of how Life can be, friendship issues, bullying, racism, confusion about gender, sex, when to date and who we are as an emerging adult in the world.
Where does a young person go to be heard and validated? Sometimes our parents are struggling themselves, sometimes their lives are too busy or stressful. Perhaps trust has been broken and the young person feels alone, disconnected and confused. Perhaps we don't understand our emotional selves in these early years and that can be overwhelming. There is social media pressure to "be" or look a certain way as well as peer and parental pressures, alongside having to navigate the opposite sex and substance usage. |
Issues that arise for teenagers and adolescents range from anxiety, depression, lack of sleep, tension and stress, tearfulness, hate of the self, self-harm, eating disorders, drug use, alcohol use, promiscuity and thoughts of taking one's own life.
